REPORT YOUR CHUM SALMON ENCOUNTER
The Chum Salmon Reintroduction Project monitors the abundance and distribution of adult and juvenile Chum Salmon and their habitats in Oregon tributaries to the Lower Columbia River Basin. Monitoring efforts are currently ongoing in four Lower Columbia River Chum Salmon populations. Click to learn more.
BROODSTOCK In 2010, ODFW began assisting WDFW in collecting Chum Salmon to start a local Broodstock for Oregon's Chum Salmon recovery efforts. ODFW uses eggs transferred from this effort in addition to eggs spawned from Chum Salmon returning to Big Creek Hatchery, OR to release up to 300,000 juvenile Chum Salmon each year. REINTRODUCTION In 2014 and 2015, ODFW transferred eggs from Chum Salmon spawned at Big Creek Hatchery to a remote site incubator to evaluate this strategy for recovery efforts. From 2013-2015, pre-spawn Chum Salmon captured at Big Creek Hatchery were outplanted in several Lower Columbia tributaries to monitor spawning production. Click to learn more.
RESTORATION Habitat restoration is a key component of the Chum Salmon recovery strategy. Current efforts are focused on creating or improving spawning habitat to promote natural recolonization of Chum Salmon. This may occur through restoring habitat forming processes at the watershed scale, targeted local projects, or creation of artificial spawning channels. Click to learn more.
RESEARCH When the Chum Salmon Recovery Strategy was prepared in 2010, little was known a bout the specific reintroduction strategies that should be used to recover the species. To address these data gaps, the Chum Salmon Reintroduction Project conducts research to resolve critical uncertainties related to reintroduction efforts and to identify and address limiting factors.
