Artificial Spawning Channels - Background

Image
Spawning Channels: Spawning channels constructed for Chum Salmon are artificial channels where habitat conditions (water depth, flow, substrate size, and water chemistry) are designed to meet requirements for spawning and to maximize egg-to-fry survival rates. The first step in constructing a spawning channel is to determine whether hydrological conditions are suitable to provide sufficient flow to a channel.

Sandy River Delta: In the Sandy River population, hydrological data were collected on Sundial Island over a two year period. Unfortunately, conditions were not found to be suitable for a spawning channel. Efforts are now underway to investigate other potentiaI spawning channel sites, potentially on the Sandy River Delta.
