Broodstock Collection (Big Creek Hatchery, OR)

Steps in the Broodstock Collection Process, with Photos, Big Creek Hatchery
  1. Adult Chum Salmon are captured and sorted in the Big Creek Hatchery holding pens and euthanized for spawning. (Photos 1. & 2.) 
  2. Prior to spawning, eggs are counted and weighed to calculate fecundity of a portion of female spawners. (Photo 3.)
  3. Males and females are spawned to maximize genetic diversity based on the sex ratio of available adults during a spawning event. (Photo 4.
  4. After spawning, a variety of biological data is recorded for each fish and scale, otolith, and genetic samples are collected. (Photo 5.)
