Excess sediment after rainstorm in Mill Creek, Oregon

Habitat restoration at the watershed scale requires an expIicit understanding of the processes that create habitat and where those processes may be degraded. For example, where vegetation is lacking in the riparian zone, banks may erode into the river and contribute to excess fine sediment that can suffocate eggs in redds. Likewise, a lack of vegetation in upland areas can result in more rapid transport of rain into the creek, leading to rapid floods that erode the stream. This, in turn, can cause the stream to disconnect from the floodplain and have cascading ecological effects.
